Kathleen Elizabeth Mullins

Kathleen Elizabeth Hughes was born in Queens, NY, on December 17, 1941. Her parents were James Arthur and Catherine Hughes, née Helm. She was the youngest of four children, her siblings all deceased: James Arthur, Patricia Ann, and Geraldine Catherine. She met her future husband, Robert Joseph Mullins, while they both worked in a local grocery store. He lived in Rockaway Beach, Queens with his family, just over the Cross Bay Bridge. They were married on April 29, 1961. Children followed with their oldest, Karoline Ann, their second daughter, Kathleen, then five years later their son, Robert Edward. Kathleen graduated from Stella Maris High School on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, NY. She went to work at the FBI for two years, following which she worked at American Airlines until the birth of children. She ultimately returned to the workforce as a legal secretary, first for a sole practitioner before moving to a small firm closer to her home in Melville, Long Island. Kathleen and Robert bought a house in Melville in a neighbourhood with many young families, and she made lifetime friends there. The family joined the local Catholic parish, St. Elizabeth Church. Kathleen taught catechism, coached the church’s track team and enjoyed going bowling with friends. She was also a keen reader, follower of politics and world events, and she enjoyed completing crossword puzzles. She moved from Melville following the death of her husband and relocated to Marlton, NJ to be near her eldest daughter, Karoline, and her family. Here she joined her local church, St Mary of the Lakes in Medford Lakes, NJ. Kathleen is survived by her children as well as her four grandchildren: Caroline Gregson (26), Donald Robert (25), Adrian Èibhlin (25) and Douglas Scott (22). She will be missed. The family is currently planning Kathleen’s memorial service and interment of her ashes which will be held on Long Island, NY in a few months’ time.
