Dom Wadhwa, MD passed away peacefully on June 4, 2021 at the age of 72 from heart disease. He was born Damodhar Purshotamdas Wadhwa (nicknamed “Gulu”) in Coimbatore, India on October 26, 1948. His parents were Seth Purshotamdas Dwarkadas and Parmeswari Wadhwa. He had 1 older brother (P. Radhakrishen, nicknamed “Lalu”) and 2 younger brothers (P. Manoharlal Wadhwa, nicknamed “Manu,” and Suresh Punjabi, nicknamed “Babu”). He graduated from Stanes Higher Secondary School and received a college degree in Electrical Engineering in India. He immigrated to Fargo, North Dakota in 1972 where he obtained a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of North Dakota. He was a lifelong learner, next receiving a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, followed by a medical degree at St. George’s University-School of Medicine in Grenada, British West Indies. He completed an Internal Medicine internship at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and an Internal Medicine residency at Texas Tech University - School of Medicine in Amarillo, Texas. He obtained 3 board certifications in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Hospital Medicine and completed a fellowship in Obstetrics/Gynecology and Women’s Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. He was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1988 and spent more than 30 years of his life caring for our nation’s veterans at many Veteran’s Administration hospitals throughout the country. He worked in 6 surge units in New Jersey and Pennsylvania hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021, saving many lives by working wherever the need was greatest. He is survived by his wife Nancy Irene Hoffmann, MD of Elmont, New York, living in Moorestown, New Jersey, and daughters, Mindy Elissa Hoffmann, MD (partner Max Richard Rosenheck) in Piscataway, New Jersey, and Jennifer Ann Hoffmann, MD (husband Matthew James Rowland, MD) in Chicago, Illinois. His two daughters were the pride and joy of his life.
