Frederick G. Wendel of Spring Lake NJ and a long time resident of Glen Rock and Harvey Cedars, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2016 at the age of 87 . In his final days, he was surrounded by his family. Fred was a loving husband to the late Kathryn Joyce (Wildnauer) Wendel for 52 years He was a loving father to Karen Wendel Grote and her husband Kevin, John Wendel and his wife Carol (Nieznay), Susan Wendel Benson and her husband Victor, the late Richard Wendel, Susan Griffin Wendel, and her fiancé Jimmy Sullivan. He was an adored grandfather to Jason Grote, Ellisa Grote DeAnnuntis, Alexandra Grote, Erika Wendel, Alison Wendel, and Danny Wendel. Fred was proud to be a great grandfather to Joey and Gianna DeAnnuntis and Ellie Grote. Mr. Wendel is predeceased by his parents, Consuelo and Frederick Wendel of Oradell, NJ. A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Fred was born in Rutherford and grew up in Oradell. He and his two brothers, Raymond and Richard, ran the family mechanical contracting firm, Fred Wendel Inc. in Paramus, NJ, until his retirement in 1983. During his employment, Fred and his family temporarily lived in Bermuda where he was foreman on a large mechanical contracting job. This started a love affair with the island and friends who resided there that would last for almost 6 decades. In years to follow, Fred and Joyce would return to their island more than 20 times. A passion for travel ensued and visits to 21 countries followed. Harvey Cedars on Long Beach Island became another favorite spot and a permanent residence in later years. There, Fred cherished time with his family and would often take kids and grandkids on his boat fishing, crabbing, and clamming. Along with his fishing stories, he enjoyed sharing stories of great adventures big game hunting. In recent years, Fred moved to Spring Lake, NJ, where he was able to continue to enjoy his favorite place…..the beach. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Fred’s life at a gathering to be held on November 5th from 11 am to 3 pm at The Essex and Sussex 700 Ocean Avenue, Spring Lake, NJ.
