George W Branson

October 11, 2021

George William Branson died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Monday, October 11th. George was ninety-five years old. A lifelong resident of Moorestown, he graduated from Moorestown High School in 1944. His first job was at Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia. In 1954 he was drafted into the Army where he served at Fort Bragg, North Carolina until 1956. He then worked as a mechanic at the Buick dealership in Moorestown before joining the U.S Postal Service. He worked at the Moorestown Post Office until his retirement in 1988. George married Jeanne Hancock at the Moorestown Baptist Church in 1957 after meeting through a church pen pal program between choir members and church members serving in the military. They were married for over fifty years. George was without his dear wife for the past eight years, missing her every day. George was an avid weightlifter. His garage full of weights was known affectionately as the Lenola Barbell club by his fellow lifters, who gathered there weekly for over half a century. He was also a ham radio operator. His handle was WB2DNU. George was a lifelong learner always hungry for knowledge about the world. His library of books is testament to this pursuit. Baseball and horse racing were his interests. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the trials and triumphs of the Philadelphia Phillies from the 1930s to the present. And he was a frequent visitor to the Cherry Hill and Philadelphia racetracks. George deeply loved his children and grandchildren. Nothing pleased him more than spending time with them and passing on stories about his life. He is survived by daughters Susan Branson, Kathryn Schwartz and Lisa Forrest, and by grandchildren Kaitlin Heller, Alec Schwartz, Mariassa Schwartz, Lauren Schwartz, Alexander Forrest and Jessica Forrest. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in George and Jeanne Branson’s names to the Moorestown Visiting Nurse Association’s Hospice Care.
