On January 24, 2022, Mary Josephine (Brodd) Hogan passed away peacefully at age 81. Mary Jo will be missed on her block in Brookland where she and her husband, Jack Hogan, lived for over 50 years. Mary Jo was the perfect combination of small-town Illinois and global citizen. She was a teacher for all of her life, beginning as a Peace Corps volunteer and trainer in Venezuela and Puerto Rico, teaching in Montessori schools in the Washington DC area, and expanding her reach to students in Burkina Faso, Haiti, and China. She was also a student for life, starting with a degree in Spanish Education from the University of Illinois, training as a Montessori teacher, earning a master’s degree in Education with a special interest in children’s literature from Catholic University, learning French while remaining fluent in Spanish, and always (always!) reading. Mary Jo’s passion for education and pursuit of justice were evident in the ways she inspired and encouraged others. She enjoyed running into her former students and their parents all over town. Her love of crossword puzzles, gardening, adventurous travel, and watching her favorite sports teams will be fondly remembered. Mary Jo (also known as “Dody”) is predeceased by her husband, Jack, with whom she shared three daughters, Pilar Closkey (Sean), Maura Donohue (Brendan), and Clare Reidy (Patrick) and nine grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 2nd, at 10 AM at the Franciscan Monastery at 1400 Quincy St NE, Washington, DC. Family will receive friends in the Monastery Conference Center during the hour before and hour after Mass. Please note that DC COVID protocols will be followed. A burial service will happen at a later date in her hometown of Andover, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Joseph’s Carpenter Society, 20 Church Street, Camden, NJ, 08105.
