Eva Gummeson

Eva Gummeson passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024 at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Per Ulf Gummeson of 70 years and her brother Bertil Helleberg. She is survived by her sons Michael and his wife Aerin Leduc-Gummeson, and Peter and his wife Susan Voigt Gummeson, her sister Kerstin Helleberg Gilkerson and her four grandchildren, Christopher, Alexandra, Grace and Katherine Gummeson. Eva was born in Malmö Sweden to Tore and Anna Rånlund Helleberg on July 25, 1930. Tore, a civil engineer, moved the family to Stockholm in 1939 where Eva attended an all-girls high school, Lyceum För Flickor, and junior college, Barlock Secretarial School, graduating in 1950. She specialized in foreign languages including English, German, French and Spanish. She used those skills as an au pair for a family in France in 1948, as an executive admin at Honeywell in the 1970’s and teaching for Berlitz in the 1980’s. In 1947, Eva volunteered to be a “Marin Lotta”, a member of the naval unit of the Swedish homeland defense organization, Svenska Lottakåren. She conducted her training at the Marinlottaskolan in Berga, Sweden. Her first job after Barlock was as the private secretary to the Managing Director of Svenska Mässan Bolaget, an organizer of trade fairs. Around that time, Eva conspired with her friend, classmate and future sister-in-law, Nan Kihlgren (Gummeson) to meet Ulf Gummeson. In 1952, she and Ulf married at Gustaf Adolfskyrkan in Stockholm. A week after the wedding, they left for the United States on the Swedish American Lines ship Gripsholm where Ulf would work for Höganaes Bolaget’s U.S. subsidiary, Hoeganaes Sponge Iron Corporation of Riverton, New Jersey. They settled in Moorestown, New Jersey eventually moving to Weston, Massachusetts and then back again to Moorestown. As a dual citizen, Eva retained citizenship of her beloved Sweden. She made sure that her sons spoke Swedish and learned/experienced everything about their heritage. Many family vacations were spent in Sweden visiting relatives with a mandatory week at the Helleberg family summer home in Nösund on the west coast. Eva was a loving homemaker to her husband and two sons and had many interests and hobbies including skiing, sailing, cooking, traveling, and fashion design (tailoring/creating her own clothing). She will be remembered by her family for her unconditional love, strength, sense of humor, gentle nurturing kindness, and most of all, devotion to her husband Ulf. She couldn’t have been a better mother, sister and wife. There will be a memorial service for close family in Stockholm Sweden in 2025 where she will be laid to rest at the family plot next to her husband Ulf at Norra Kyrkogården.
