Joanne A. Hilsee

Violet Joanne “Jo” (Althouse) Hilsee died on July 21, 2026, in Moorestown, New Jersey, closing a long, generous, and intellectually curious life shaped by faith, music, art, education, travel and devotion to family. Born October 4, 1931, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of Methodist minister Rev. John Nissly Althouse and Violet Elizabeth Hupper. Because her father’s calling moved the family frequently—from Philadelphia to Shenandoah and many towns in between—Joanne became adept at starting over, making friends, and observing the world with the soft, empathetic eye that later defined her life. She attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and spent cherished summers in Maine, the Pocono Mountains, and later, vacations with her own children in Ocean City, New Jersey. Joanne earned her bachelor’s degree in Journalism from McDaniel College (then Western Maryland College) in 1953. She began her career as a copywriter for the John Wanamaker department store in its heyday, where she developed her gift for effective written communications. In 1955, she married L. Bruce Hilsee Jr. in the Glenside Methodist Church, where her father then served as pastor. She was the mother of three children—Lauren Joanne Hilsee, Lissa Grace Hilsee, and Todd Bruce Hilsee—and the grandmother of Thomas Bruce Hilsee and William Coyle Hilsee. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John Hupper “Jack” Althouse, and her daughter Lauren. Joanne spent fifty years in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, where she raised her children as a devoted single mother. Her home was filled with classical music and art. Her enthusiasm for the arts and education led to volunteer work with Art Goes to School, and then to professional roles in public relations and development for institutions including the Pennsylvania State University, Ogontz Campus, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Opera Company of Philadelphia. Her commitment to learning, family and history also resulted in a legacy to promote student leadership. In 2026, the Rev. Althouse family home in Upper Pottsgrove Township—now headquarters for the celebrated environmental education nonprofit Green Allies—was dedicated as the “Jack Althouse and Joanne Hilsee Farmhouse.” In 2014, she and Jack had supported preservation of the 17‑acre property, enabling its transformation into the award-winning Althouse Arboretum. Green Allies has since been recognized with the 2024 Outstanding Environmental Education Program Award by the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Educators, and the 2025 Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. Joanne’s life was defined by curiosity, resilience, and a belief in the power of education and the arts to improve the world. She leaves behind a family who adored her, a legacy rooted in service, kindness and creativity, and a community enriched by her optimism. Services for Joanne will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in the Evergreens Chapel, 309 Bridgeboro Road, Moorestown, NJ 08056.
